TWENTY-FOUR
When I wake up the next morning, Elena, Darius, and Lennie are out, and thereâs a note in Elenaâs elegant writing on the kitchen table alongside a large cafetière sheâs left out, all ready for me to fill with water.
Iâm not sure coffee will be great for my headache, but I definitely need the boost of energy right now. Elena and I drank a lot of wine last night, or at least I did.
I pick up the note.
Iâve taken Lennie to school. Wanted to let you sleep in. Why not take the day off? Iâll call Josie and Lila to let them know they should hold the fort for you. Make yourself feel at home. Iâll see you in the evening.
Iâm grateful for Elenaâs thoughtfulness, but I canât do what she suggests. I canât just sit around and do nothing. I have too much work to do at the shop to simply take the day off. And now I guess Iâm going to need to do all the admin related to cancelling the wedding too. But Iâm not sure Iâm emotionally ready to tackle that right away. I drink an excessive amount of coffee and force myself to eat some of the homemade granola Elena left out for me, then I take a shower and get dressed.
As I walk out of the house, the bright sunshine feels overwhelming and brash, and I wish I had a pair of sunglasses with me.
Before I head to Bliss & Twine, hoping that immersing myself in work will provide some form of distraction, I drop by Honeywood to say hello to Gloria and I end up spilling my heart out as always, updating her on everything that happened last night.
At first, she says nothing, but then she reaches out and draws me into a hug. âI know this might be hard for you to hear,â she whispers before letting go, âbut I think this is for the best. Iâm glad you and Lennie are safe.â
Sheâs right, it is hard to hear that. It was my decision to leave Nathan, but it hurts like hell.
âDo you want another chai? It might help soothe your nerves,â Gloria offers kindly.
I shake my head and smile gratefully. âThanks, but not today. I really need to get to the shop. I have a few things I need to take care of.â I give her a quick hug before heading out the door.
The walk to Bliss & Twine is a short one, but every step feels heavier than the last. As I push open the door to the shop, the familiar smells of fresh flowers and scented candles envelop me, offering a temporary sense of comfort.
The morning light filters through the large display window, casting a warm glow over the colorful array of blooming plants, and I take a deep breath, trying to push away the lingering unease from the events of last night.
âHi Hannah.â Josie appears from the back room, carrying a bouquet of vibrant peonies. Her face lights up when she sees me, but the smile quickly fades as she narrows her eyes.
